“Cisco’s rigorous testing and Empress Embedded Database’s proven history of reliability in mission-critical applications convinced them to select Empress. Since then, Empress database has been flawlessly embedded and deployed in thousands of Cisco systems worldwide.”
Empress Delivers Fast, Multi-Platform Data Management to Cisco’s VlanDirector Cisco Systems, the worldwide leader in networking, uses the Empress Embedded Database in its VlanDirector routing and network management software. is one in a trio of network management applications that make up the CiscoWorks for Switched Internetworks (CWSI). Cisco VlanDirector is GUI-based virtual local area network management software application that detects configuration inconsistencies and reports them to switches.  It allows you to create, modify, and manage VLANs, offers multiple windows for displaying configuration status, and provides both physical and logical views of interconnected switches.  Network configuration information is stored in an Empress database where it is monitored and updated. Virtual local area networks (VLANs) are typically created to provide the segmentation services traditionally provided by routers in LAN configurations. A VLAN is a switched network that is logically segmented by functions, project teams, or applications without regard to the physical location of users and can include a mix of systems running on different architectures.  Each switch port can be assigned to a VLAN and ports within the same VLAN share broadcasts. Ports that do not belong to that VLAN do not share these broadcasts thus improving overall performance of the network. To achieve the fastest performance speed, Cisco developers opted to use the low level Empress C-API MR Routines. kernel level MR interface includes a set of database manipulation routines for direct access to database structures using the C programming language. This interface provides faster execution times than any of the query language interfaces, since the parser is not invoked for each call.  MR interface also provides much greater control over what is done with the retrieved data. Because different systems within a VLAN potentially run on a mixed variety of architectures and operating systems, it was a high priority for Cisco to select a database that easily works in a variety of hardware and software platforms including Windows on Intel, Solaris on Sun Sparc, HP-UX on Hewlett-Packard, and AIX on IBM RS6000.  Empress Embedded Database runs on these and all major UNIX, Windows and real-time platforms.  Empress is also easily portable to specific board and cross-development environments. “Cisco came to Empress seeking a solid, reliable data management system that they could easily embed into their network management solution with zero worry,” states John Kornatowski, president of Empress Software.  rigorous testing and Empress Embedded Database’s proven history of reliability in mission-critical applications convinced them to select Empress.  Since then, Empress database has been flawlessly embedded and deployed in thousands of Cisco systems worldwide.” |
