Empress Software announces the new EMPRESS RDBMS Version 8.62,
a minor version release with a number of exciting new features and enhancements added to the core EMPRESS RDBMS v8.60. An upgrade from Empress Version 8.60 to Empress RDBMS Version 8.62 may result in a number of key benefits:
Benefit: SIGNIFICANTLY IMPROVED PERFORMANCE
Empress RDBMS is reclaiming its leadership position in the domain of database engine performance. Numerous improvements to the Empress database engine and Empress Connectivity Server has landed Empress firmly ahead of the pack. Certain client application based operations are completed 10 times faster in Version 8.62 when compared to Version 8.20. Users of Microsoft Visual Basic applications stand to benefit the most, as they will experience a much faster response by replacing an older Empress database engine with the new one. Benchmarks show that in complex series of Visual Basic database commands, Empress RDBMS Version 8.62 runs head to head with MS SQL Server, and is twice as fast as MySQL, Solid, or Birdstep.
Benefit: VIRTUALLY UNLIMITED EMPRESS DATABASE TABLE SIZE
Most installations generate and retain more and more data every day. Many 32-bit operating systems now provide support for a file size greater than 2 GB. Empress RDBMS Version 8.62 also supports table size greater than 2 GB on 32-bit operating systems that provide special extensions for large files. These operating systems include Windows 2000 and Windows NT 4.0, IBM AIX 4.X, Compaq Tru64UNIX 5.1, HP-UX 11.00, and Solaris 8/9.
Bottom line is that users of 32-bit systems need not worry about data growth rate in their Empress database.
Benefit: IMPROVED COMPLIANCY in SQL, ODBC and JDBC API's
Empress RDBMS Version 8.62 has made great strides in aligning its Application Programming Interfaces with de-facto standards. These improvements provide for: (a) easier migration of third party applications from foreign database engines to Empress RDBMS and (b) shorter learning curve for Empress developers.
Benefit: EASIER INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
Today's fast pace allows very little time for tinkering with new products. Therefore, it is paramount that new prospects who evaluate Empress RDBMS not be stymied by complicated installation procedures. For that reason Empress Software continues to improve its installation scripts. The challenge is to find the right mix between a quick installation and provision of all the necessary tools. The new Empress for Windows installation achieves that perfect balance.
In addition, in order to facilitate the evaluation process even further, Empress Software has arranged for Internet based download of frequently evaluated Empress products, such as Empress RDBMS Version 8.62 for Windows 2000, XP, NT, for Linux Kernel 2.4, and for QNX 6.2 and QNX 4.25.
Benefit: GREATLY IMPROVED INTERACTION WITH EMPRESS RDBMS
Empress RDBMS is the embedded real-time database engine. This implies that Empress RDBMS is used as a component in custom applications. In other words, most often interactions with the Empress engine are performed through applications. However, during custom application development most software engineers find it beneficial to be able to access with the database engine in interactive mode, where a single command produces a result set. Empress RDBMS has always included Interactive Command Line SQL with its engine. Now Version 8.62 is supplemented with a JAVA based GUI Interactive SQL. Both novice and expert Empress users will appreciate the ability to create Empress tables and view its content through a point-and-click interface.
Benefit: BETTER DEVELOPMENT TOOLS TRANSLATE INTO
ADVANCED APPLICATION FUNCTIONALITY
One of distinguishing Empress RDBMS qualities is the support for Persistent Stored Modules (PSM) as per SQL-99 standard. Other databases offer a smaller subset of this functionality under the generic term known as Triggers and Stored Procedures.
Empress Version 8.62 further widens the gap in this department between Empress and its competitors by bolstering the PSM as follows:
a) Empress PSM are developed in Embedded SQL, as well as in MR Routines. Essentially, Empress PSM are containers for user-defined functions, procedures and operators. PSM developed with MR Routines provide users with unparalleled speed of execution and data control. PSM developed in Embedded SQL save development time. Developers creating Triggers and Stored Procedures for other database engines must first learn yet another language, because Embedded SQL is not supported in substandard Triggers and Stored Procedures.
b) Empress Version 8.62 offers a unique SELECT Trigger, as well industry wide UPDATE, DELETE and INSERT Triggers. The SELECT Trigger allows developers to track SELECT commands executed against Empress database. This functionality is especially useful in logging public interest in specific items in WEB based applications, as well for applications dealing with security, data warehousing and surveys.
In summary, Empress Version 8.62 delivers:
- MUCH FASTER PERFORMANCE
- VIRTUALLY UNLIMITED TABLE SIZE for
32-bit o/s users
- NEW GRAPHICAL USER INTERFACE
- ADVANCED DEVELOPMENT TOOLS and FEATURES
